Breathing 1-2-3

While there are over 700 + breathing methods, not ONE of them is perfect. Yup. There is no one perfect breathing pattern. In fact, some breathing methods contradict one another, leaving you to wonder ‘HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BREATHE?’

The reality is, you need to reconnect with your current breathing pattern and branch outward from there to learn what works for you. In this 4 part video series, you’ll learn about popular breathing drills and how to tailor the method to your nervous system!

The Check-In

Breathing is a multifaceted skill. Your brain is at work with each inhale and exhale. You cannot expect to ‘retrain’ the respiratory system without discovering areas of inability and confusion. This disconnect may be the reason you currently have poor breathing patterns. In re-learning how to breathe, you are re-learning how to function as a whole and this takes patience with the brain and body.

The first step is learning your nervous system as I created a video highlighting initial steps to take while checking in with respiratory training.

Debunking the belly

Beyond the preparation aspect of respiratory breathing, we need to review some misconceptions about breathing, specifically ‘belly breathing.’ This instructional suggestion is often meant to help you reconnect with diaphragmatic breathing. But the actual concept of belly breathing is very different from breathing with the diaphragm.

“Belly breathing is better for you”

Meeeeeh. So close yet not exactly.

When you study sciences like Chinese Medicine and Neurology, you learn to take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt. Why? Because there are often two sides to the coin. Let’s break down belly breathing for example.

Belly breathing isn’t totally wrong but we need to differentiate between the intention of actually moving the abdominals OR contracting the diaphragm during the inhalation of our breath. In this video, I demonstrate how to awaken the diaphragm with a simply drill called “Diaphragm Stretch”.

When it comes to movement, learn to break things down to work for you.
